Reasons to join the axe throwing league – Part One
The Whistle Punks Urban Axe Throwing league is a six-week axetravaganza that you need in your life.
We could tell you how much fun you’ll have, but why take our word for it when you can hear it from people who have experienced it first hand?
In our first of a series of interviews with our league players, here’s Ian.
What was it that first attracted you to the league?
I already came to the regular sessions before and loved it! But what’s not to like? It’s throwing axes after all. If you decide to become a league member there is much more of it. You get to throw on a weekly basis, and you’re able to compete more, learn more trick-shots, play more games and have fun with others who enjoy it as much as you do!
What was the highlight of the league for you?
It has all been brilliant! I’ve been a member for the past two league competitions and I came in runner-up in the last one, missing out on winning the trophy axe by two points. I would have come back though even if I’d been in last place, because of how unique and how enjoyable the whole experience is. The staff are all wonderful, helpful and friendly, and after most league nights everyone heads down to a local bar for drinks and pizza. It’s a very social occasion all based around axe throwing.
What were the other league members like and did you make friends?
There’s a real mix of people. There are teachers, university researchers, some who are part way through PhDs, tattoo artists, chemists and so on. It attracts a varied following, and everyone feels welcome to come and join in. There’s even a Whatsapp group we use to keep in touch with one another and plan activities together outside of axe-throwing.
What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the league?
You mean besides the obvious? Just do it! You won’t regret it. You’ll meet lots of new friends, learn a new sport and feel part of something special. The only thing is that not enough people know about it! Everyone I’ve told that I’m part of an axe throwing league tells me how cool it is, but that they haven’t heard about it before but want to know where to sign up.
If you could throw an axe into or at any object, what would it be?
Hitting a ping pong ball in the air after someone has thrown it across the target, because can you imagine being able to hit such a small moving target with an axe? You’d be like Mr Miyagi catching flies with chopsticks, but even cooler because it’s throwing an axe!
Next time we are chatting with Lauren. Check out the post here.
